Living in Candyland
Halloween is THE BIG candy holiday in a country where we are already bombarded by sugary sweets year-round. Whether you are a parent or just a friendly neighbor, chances are there will be a stockpile of candy in your vicinity in the coming days.
Even if you usually abstain from candy, a world without sweets is not a happy place, so perhaps now is the time to enjoy something really good. Don’t settle for a low-quality candy though; make every calorie worth it!
Things to try:
- dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate (anything above 60% cocoa)
- home-made cookies and sweets
- treats made with real fruit (strawberries dipped in dark chocolate, for example)
- fun size candy instead of full size (30-50% less calories)
- Candy with nuts or dried fruit (chocolate covered almonds, raisins).
Read ingredient lists and avoid candies and sweets that use:
- partially hydrogenated oils (trans-fats)
- artificial sweeteners
- artificial colors
- ingredients such as TBHQ and DATEM.
Important tip: Make sure to rinse your mouth and floss diligently after enjoying your candy.
Bottom Line
Halloween comes round just once a year, so don’t feel too guilty about indulging in high quality sweets for one night.
